My boyfriend and I used Bernadette as a real estate agent, and were very unsatisfied with the situation both from her and the Brokerage. Up until the point that we put in an offer on a house, she was great. Easy to talk to, work with and prompt. We found an ideal house for us, and we put in an offer. During the negotiation process, we felt pressured to put in an offer higher than we were comfortable with, but we are young and first time home buyers so we trusted her. After the offer was accepted was where it went sour. Bernadette was unhappy with our choices in home and septic inspectors, pushing for us to use hers. We used the well inspector she offered because there aren't many others around. During the inspection process, she proceeded to call our home inspector an "Alarmist" for pointing out key factors that were wrong with the house. As well, during the process she would disregard my boyfriend's opinions on the items mentioned. He is experienced in foundation repairs and general home repairs, but felt disrespected by Bernadette. We decided to not purchase the house, as it had 3 big ticket items requiring repair, We were uncomfortable using Bernadette as a real estate agent any farther, and we told her so. She said she was "thrown off-guard" and needed to think about it, Instead of understanding where we were coming from, she felt our reasons were invalid and would not terminate the buyers agreement. We then had to seek help from a friend of the family to send a letter to the broker manager asking for us to have the buyers agreement terminated. The broker manager was unreasonable, and decided to believe we had bought a home and kept us in the contract. For what reason, we have no idea. We then reached out to the president, asking for some help above both the manager and the agent. He obviously felt his employees were in the right and felt like he was being generous in giving us 4 options rather than just simply honoring our reasonable wish of being released from the contract. All options were not fair to us or understanding of the situation. So, we have waited out this contract to the bitter end as we felt it was the only option. During this process, we were discussing the situation with a lawyer, and not once has he heard of this happening, nor should it ever happen. As well, other agents and friends we have talked to cannot believe this was allowed to happen. We feel we had to share this information for other prospective buyers considering using her as an agent, or using this brokerage any further. This situation has taught us a large amount about using real estate agents, and how trust the right ones. We were essentially unable to buy a house during when the housing market was most active, and we missed out on buying homes during this period.
