I worked as a fellow Realtor in their office for 13 years. Now that I'm out of that business, these two are my go to for my own transactions and for anyone I know who is looking for a Realtor in the area. Some Realtors are really just in the business with selfish motivations and a lack of attention to detail. They are the polar opposite and long ago earned my respect with their dedication. You would be forgiven for thinking that as someone with real estate experience, I would feel comfortable trying to save a few bucks on commission and do things on my own. I've certainly had the thought, but I know that the laws, regulations and common practices are constantly shifting. This is not to mention the market itself which although less opaque than the rest, is much harder to understand the dynamics of when looking in from the outside. My sister and sister and I wanted to buy an acreage in the Nanaimo area to have a hobby farm and horses. Tom and Jan made a big lifestyle change as easy as it could have been on their end. We had an accepted offer on a larger acreage but ended up having our financing fall through due to house sales in Vancouver correcting so much. Tom handled unwinding the deal when we were a bit devastated, and got us looking at slightly lower prices properties once we had all of our money in hand from our sale. He traipsed around all of the farms we looked at to get an idea of what we could handle, offering comments on what roof was end of life with a replacement estimate, etc. Buying a farm is more complex than buying a house. The land, the location, the house, the outbuildings, and the utilities are all different in combination. Tom looked into all of those aspects, as well as answering our land agent father’s many questions. We ended up being able to negotiate a reasonable price that was within our risk tolerance so we could make some improvements to the property upon moving in. Jan made sure we had all of the info we needed about starting our Hydro, getting insurance, etc. My sister misses hanging out with Tom for property search stuff because they got along really well. 100% would use them again, and highly recommend their expertise and service! - Jon

I've used Jan's services for three real estate transactions and plan to use her again if needed. One wonderful thing about having Jan as your agent is you get a bonus agent, her equally superb husband Tom! Because they back each other up, you aren't left hanging. Jan is fantastically knowledgeable and a great communicator. I've heard from friends that they felt pressured by their agents but I felt the opposite. Jan is very supportive of your best interests and answers your questions and offers neutral advice while letting you find your own way when you buy with her. When I sold with her, the photos and description of my listing also really helped buyers know if my house was right for them. She employed a strategy for viewings that disrupted my tenants fewer times and showed my house to the best advantage, making that part of the process far less stressful for everyone under my roof. Not only is it a kind thing to do, but keeping tenants happy when they know they may be evicted for a new owner's person use is a good idea to reduce the chance of them lashing out or being careless with their unit. I also enjoy her wry sense of humour and her grounded personality. (Also not true of all agents I've interacted with in my real estate interactions!) Pick Jan if you want a straight shooter who will get your house sold as quickly as it can! - Darby
